Project Scope
Baldwin & Francis were commissioned to deliver a structured PSP training programme for six rail engineers, ensuring each participant received in‑depth technical guidance and hands-on experience with PSP equipment.
Training covered:
- PSP functionality and architecture
- Switching procedures
- Safety protocols and isolation procedures
- Fault finding and troubleshooting
- Component identification and operation
- Maintenance requirements and common failure modes
- Regulatory and compliance obligations
Objectives
Our rail client required training that would:
- Improve engineer capability when working with safety-critical rail infrastructure equipment
- Reduce risk during maintenance and operational procedures to signalling
- Ensure knowledge aligns with rail industry standards
- Provide a controlled environment for hands-on practical learning
- Support workforce competency records and continuing professional development
- Real time testing of candidates understanding.
Our Approach
Baldwin & Francis delivered a highly structured programme using:
Tell – Explain – Describe Methodology
Tell: Present the theoretical principles and safety-critical requirements behind PSPs.
Explain: Break down each system component, showing how it functions within rail signalling power networks.
Describe: Demonstrate real-world scenarios, fault conditions, and best-practice maintenance steps.
Training Delivery
- Held at the Baldwin & Francis training facility in Sheffield
- Limited to six participants to maximise engagement and hands-on interaction
- Led by experienced B&F engineers with specialist PSP expertise
- Included practical demonstrations on live and training PSP units
- Incorporation of real case fault scenarios and operational testing
- Real time testing of candidates understanding.
Outcome
The training resulted in:
- Significant improvement in engineer confidence when working on PSP equipment
- Stronger understanding of isolation, inspection, and safety protocols
- Enhanced competency aligned with rail safety standards
- Reduced risk of operational downtime through improved fault diagnosis
- Positive feedback from all candidates on delivery, clarity, and relevance
Client Impact
The rail organisation now benefits from a more capable, safety-conscious, and technically proficient team. Their engineers can complete PSP-related work more efficiently, reducing the potential for delays, maintenance errors, and safety breaches.
The training supports ongoing infrastructure resilience and contributes to the organisation’s long-term strategy of upskilling staff to handle complex, safety-critical electrical systems.
THE BALDWIN & FRANCIS DIFFERENCE
Every project Baldwin & Francis undertakes is different, with its own unique set of challenges and requirements. Customer choice and specific application demands drive our design-and-build programmes, so we can deliver precisely what our customers need.
In this project, as in all projects, we worked incredibly closely and highly effectively with the consultant and the Trust’s engineering staff to ensure optimum service delivery.
All feedback from this – and every other project we undertake – is fed back into our management system as part of our continuous-improvement plan, which will ultimately help us deliver even better projects and service next time.
